Google to invest $15B in India’s largest AI hub

  • Google  announced a $15 billion investment to build a 1-gigawatt AI data center and hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest investment outside the U.S. and biggest commitment to India to date, rolling out over five years through 2030.
  • The announcement comes amid trade tensions following President Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian imports imposed in August, which prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urge “swadeshi” (made in India) products and Indian officials to promote local alternatives like Zoho Corporation, Arattai, and MapMyIndia.
  • The AI hub will feature Google’s full technology stack including custom Tensor Processing Units and Gemini AI models, while supporting consumer services like Google SearchYouTube, and Gmail, with plans to scale to multiple gigawatts over time.
  • Google partnered with Bharti Airtel and Adani Group-backed AdaniConneX to build the data center and subsea cable infrastructure, with the project expected to create over 100,000 jobs.
