OpenAI Inc. is offering a free year of its ChatGPT Go service to users in India, raising its bid to capture a market of 1.4 billion people.

The world’s most valuable startup will open the free promotion to users on Nov. 4, to coincide with its first DevDay Exchange in the country. Users who sign up will get a free year of ChatGPT Go, which was first introduced in India — as the most affordable paid tier — in August at a cost of 399 rupees (less than $5) per year.
Rival Perplexity AI Inc. offers free access to its premium plan through a partnership with telecom giant Bharti Airtel Ltd., while Alphabet Inc.’s Google made its Gemini AI Pro membership freely accessible to students for a year.
ChatGPT Go combines the chatbot’s most popular features with higher message limits, more image generation and larger file uploads than the standard unpaid version.
“India is ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing markets,” OpenAI said in a statement on Tuesday.
